Swimming Goggles and Masks

Every summer in New Zealand we grab our togs, the sunscreen and hats are slopped and slapped, the chilly bin packed and we’re off to the beaches,lakes,rivers and swimming pools.  And don’t forget any trip to the Pacific Islands!!!! But if you can’t  see too well without your glasses, you may be missing out on some of the action.  We can show you the options;

Swimming Goggles

Goggles offer protection from the water and the sun, but by themselves offer nothing to correct the vision.  However, you can have your prescription put into swim goggles offering the protection you want and the clear vision you need.  If the eyeglass prescription is fairly mild, the traditional swim goggles will fit the bill.  But for swimmers with high prescriptions it’s a whole new underwater world with prescription swim goggles. For lower prescriptions these are available “off the shelf”

Prescription Dive Masks

For the snorkelers and divers, there are prescription inserts that can be added to a diving mask.  This is especially helpful for divers who need to keep tabs on their air gauge, compass, and depth monitor.  Diving is an expensive sport, but an additional investment in a prescription diving mask can bring out all of the underwater beauty. We can fit lenses to virtually any mask.

Contact Lenses

For swimmers, snorkelers, and divers, another option is daily use contact lenses-worn once and then discarded. This is the ultimate in flexibility and health for your eyes. Absolutely ideal for part time wearers especially for all sport and leisure activities.  This is perfect for the patients who only want to wear contact lenses for that particular task.  For example, a diver would insert the contact lenses before the beginning of the trip, wear their regular dive mask, and they’ll have clear underwater vision.  The added bonus is that when then get back on the boat and remove their mask, they still have clear vision.  At the end of the trip, the contact lenses are removed and thrown away.  This option is inexpensive and offers more flexibility than a prescription mask.

So protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays by wearing sunglasses,a hat , apply sunscreen designed for the face around the eyes for protection, and consider your underwater vision options.  Have fun!
