Slip, Slop, Slap, Wrap: Why Sunglasses Are Important In Tauranga

It’s no secret that Tauranga is an amazing place to live.

We’re very lucky to be surrounded by plenty of outdoor activities and a beautiful coastline – both of which make protecting our eyes from UV rays super important.

Slip, Slop, Slap and WRAP!

It’s about time we stood up for the ‘Wrap’ part of this popular saying, which is about wrapping on sunglasses.

Just like our skin, our eyes are impacted by the harmful effects of UV rays. UV rays damage the natural lens of our eye, much like what happens to a clear piece of plastic that’s been left in the sun for too long – it fades and becomes more and more brittle over time.

Continued exposure to UV rays add-up over time, so while the impact may not become apparent for years, the damage has already been done and it’s normally too late to reverse the sun’s effects.

UV damage has also been linked to the two leading causes of vision loss in over 55’s; Cataracts and Macular Degeneration. And that’s not to mention basal cell carcinoma (BCC), or cancer of the eye-lid that can occur from excess sun exposure.

So how will you protect your eyes this summer?

By wearing sunglasses, you can seriously improve your chances of maintaining healthy vision throughout the later years of your life.
