5 Things You Shouldn’t Do With Your Contact Lenses

Calling all contact lens wearers in Tauranga.

Do you know the do’s and don’ts when it comes to wearing contact lenses?

Here are 5 things to avoid

  1. 5 Things You Shouldn't Do With Your Contact LensesSleeping in them
    • Sleeping in your contact lenses is not recommended as it can cause pink eye, dry eyes or keratitis – a sight threatening infection.
  2. Wearing them in saunas, spas or thermal pools
    • The majority of contact lens manufacturers recommend NOT wearing contact lenses in saunas, spas or thermal pools. Chlorine and heat are a bad combination – increasing the risk of infection from micro-organisms.
  3. Sharing them
    • With the growing popularity of coloured contact lenses, this is becoming an issue – especially amongst teenagers. Sharing your contact lenses is an absolute no-no under all circumstances (some teenagers have lost their eye-sight as a result of sharing contacts)
  4. Using saliva, water or any other non-sterile solution to moisten them
    • Any liquid that’s not sterilised could be contaminated, so only use the contact lens solution recommended by your optometrist.
  5. Re-using the solution
    • Your contact lens solution is disposable, meaning fresh solution should be used for each application. Note: the solution case itself doesn’t last forever either, we recommend disposing of your case every three months.
